Anthropic’s compute bill now eats a bigger share of every dollar

Anthropic updated its IPO registration Monday with a quarter of fresh numbers, and they cut against the usual pre-listing story.

Revenue for the period ending September 30 reached $17B, up from $11.5B three months prior. Operating losses also grew.

The ratio is going the wrong way

Compute consumed 58 percent of revenue in the quarter, against 48 percent before it. Revenue per dollar of compute, tracked in the filing, climbed above 2x earlier in 2025 and has slipped back to 1.72x.

The company spent $10B on compute in the quarter. Half of that, $5B, came through short-term commitments, which the filing says cost materially more than equivalent capacity on multi-year terms.

Demand outran provisioned supply, so Anthropic bought on the spot-like end of the market. Its public deals with SpaceX at $1.25B a month, Nscale, Akamai and Volta are all versions of the same tradeoff, smaller operators offering flexible capacity at premium rates rather than hyperscaler terms.

Why the shape may not last

Anthropic is building its own capacity under a program it calls Anthropic Direct, but the filing is explicit that compute will remain the largest operating expense for the foreseeable future.

There is a reading in which this is a growth artifact. Revenue is expanding close to 50 percent a quarter, and a lab buying badly to keep pace is a better problem than a lab with idle capacity.

There is another reading. The ratio only improves if either demand cools or multi-year supply arrives, and the company controls neither the bond market nor local planning committees standing between it and more data centers.
