A 30MW hyperscale AI data centre in Jakarta is finished, LG Group’s information technology arm said Monday. The customer behind the build is a joint venture called KMG, formed by Indonesia’s Sinar Mas Group with Korea Investment Real Asset Management.
The company describes it as the first time a Korean firm has delivered an AI data centre for a client outside the country. Expansion into Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan is planned.
Cooling built for dense racks
The hall uses hybrid air and liquid cooling to hold racks above 300 kW, a density that would be unmanageable with air alone. The site is designed to scale as far as 400MW.
Density is the constraint operators in hot climates care about most. Ambient temperatures raise the cost of air cooling, and Southeast Asian grids are not uniformly prepared for a single customer drawing hundreds of megawatts.
A regional race with Korean plumbing
Jakarta sits in the middle of a build-out where Gulf, Chinese and US operators are all competing for land, power and permits. Korea’s entry is being sold less on model training than on construction and integration work.
Whether the design keeps its economics will depend on the power contracts behind it, which LG CNS and KMG have not disclosed.
For now the deliverable is a working hall with a small initial draw and a very large design ceiling, which is how most of this year’s new AI capacity arrives.
