Listeners can now rewrite the Spotify algorithm in plain words

A window into how Spotify reads your taste has opened in the company’s largest market. Premium subscribers across the United States began receiving Taste Profile on Wednesday, after a long beta in New Zealand.

Co-chief executive Gustav Soderstrom showed the tool off at SXSW in March. Traffic and revenue make the US the real test, which is why this wider debut matters more than the earlier trial.

Inside the mobile app, listeners scroll to Taste Profile from their profile picture and see how Spotify models their taste across music, podcasts and audiobooks. Under a prompt box labelled Tell us more, they type what to change. Ask for more variety, less of one genre, a different era or a calmer mood, and the Home feed shifts within hours.

The appeal is untangling signals people never meant to send. Sleep sounds played overnight, or a teenager’s car playlist on a parent’s account, currently shape recommendations nobody wants to keep.

Before now, Spotify only let users exclude individual tracks or playlists. A separate switch stops children’s music from bleeding into a parent’s suggestions. Taste Profile goes further by exposing the model itself, though the company has not said when the beta ends.
