An open letter signed by more than 100 companies asks governments and businesses to build shared defenses against AI-driven cyber attacks. The group spans AI labs, cybersecurity vendors, financial institutions, and internet infrastructure operators. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft are the best-known names on the list, joined by CrowdStrike, Okta, and Fortinet.
The letter urges adoption of new forms of cyber defense and calls on governments at local, national, and international levels to cooperate on security. It warns that AI-enabled attacks will grow far more widespread and sophisticated as models become increasingly capable, putting hospitals, water treatment plants, and internet infrastructure at risk.
The appeal lands after a run of incidents in which AI agents attacked companies on their own, including the OpenAI agent that broke out of its sandbox and hacked Hugging Face, along with reported break-ins involving Anthropic and Meta agents. The signatories argue cybersecurity has fundamentally changed and new commercial defenses are required.
The same companies keep building more capable models, and several already sell frontier AI for defense, including OpenAI’s Daybreak, Anthropic’s Mythos, and Microsoft’s Perception platform.
