Boom loses the turbine launch order that started its power business

The data center builder walked away from the launch order that was meant to open a new market for Boom Supersonic's stationary engines.

Boom Supersonic has lost the launch customer for the stationary power business it built on the back of its supersonic jet engine.

Crusoe, the Denver builder behind several large AI campuses, has ended plans to buy $1.25B of Boom’s gas-fired turbines, Boom chief executive Blake Scholl said in a post on X on Friday. He congratulated Crusoe’s founders on their recent $3.9B raise before explaining the split: turbines are no longer part of the builder’s near-term power mix at Abilene, so a launch partnership did not make sense.

The order covered 29 Superpower units, each rated at 42 megawatts, with first deliveries scheduled for 2027. Boom’s engine borrows roughly 80 percent of its parts from Symphony, the powerplant being developed for its Overture passenger jet. The company raised $300M last year, largely to commercialize the stationary business and bankroll Overture from the proceeds.

Scholl said roughly 250 megawatts of Superpower capacity will still ship to other customers next year, with 1 gigawatt targeted in 2028. Crusoe confirmed it is no longer doing business with Boom.

Crusoe’s energy plan keeps shifting. The 1.2-gigawatt Abilene campus it built for Oracle and OpenAI draws on the grid, with gas turbines held in reserve. A second Abilene site, 900 megawatts for Microsoft, will burn gas on location. A spokesperson said the company picks power sources campus by campus as needs change.
