The layer that lets developers shop for AI models is about to belong to a payments company. Bloomberg reported Sunday that Stripe has finalized an acquisition of OpenRouter, the model gateway startup, for more than $7B; Stripe declined to comment.
OpenRouter acts as a single front door to more than 400 models from different labs, so customers can pick providers by task and budget without getting locked into one vendor. The startup claims about 8 million users worldwide and has pitched itself as the payment-routing playbook applied to AI.
Its last private round, a $113M Series B in May, landed at a reported $1.3B valuation with Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet’s CapitalG participating. Talks with Stripe surfaced in the Wall Street Journal last month, and Bloomberg’s account puts the agreed price above $7B, about five times that May figure.
The combination would hand Stripe a seat in the infrastructure layer where enterprise AI traffic gets allocated, at a moment when payments, model access, and agent tooling are converging. It is also the latest sign of consolidation among the intermediaries that sit between AI labs and their customers.
