Small British AI startups have long struggled to win government contracts, outbid by bigger firms with deeper reserves. A £100M procurement scheme now hands them a route in, with the first four competitions opened August 31.
Chancellor John Healey unveiled the challenges at the G20 finance ministers meeting in North Carolina. They span the NHS, defence, computing efficiency, and AI agent security, with the health challenge run alongside the Department of Health and Social Care and a compute-efficiency track led with ARIA’s Scaling Inference Lab.
The scheme lets early-stage founders apply for upfront payments where needed and keeps intellectual property with the winning companies, so pilots can grow into commercial products sold in Britain and abroad.
Sovereign AI, the government unit behind the scheme, exists to help British AI companies start, scale, and win globally.
