The homework-help arms race has a new entrant: OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teens, a version of the chatbot that nudges students toward guided studying when it catches them angling for a shortcut.

Study Mode replaces bare answers with leading questions and step-by-step scaffolding. Suspected cheating triggers homework reminders that push the user back into study mode, and quizzes plus learning visualizations round out the package. Parents can set whether the mode starts enabled.

Default protections follow OpenAI’s Under-18 Principles, a set of rules the company says draws on developmental science. Older parental controls, including Quiet Hours and safety notifications, carry into the new product.

The timing tracks a long legal tail: lawsuits blaming chatbots for teen suicides and mental harm, plus a wave of classroom cheating scandals. OpenAI acknowledged the gap, noting ChatGPT passed 900 million weekly users before teen-specific safeguards existed.

A CodeAI partnership aims to teach students how the technology works, how to steer it, and how to second-guess it.

The open question is enforcement. Teenagers routinely defeat parental controls, and OpenAI has not detailed how the new mode resists tampering. Schools, which can already manage classroom access through ChatGPT for Teachers, will be the first to find out.
