A blind shopper standing in an aisle can now ask their phone what is on the shelf and hear the answer as they move. Google launched Guided Vision inside Gemini Live on October 1, a camera-driven assistant for people who are blind or have low vision.

Using it feels like a running conversation. A Gemini Live session lets the user share a camera feed and put questions about the scene to the assistant. Answers arrive as speech. The assistant also chimes in on its own, guiding the person to line up the shot when a subject sits at the frame edge or slips out of focus. Short spoken directions carry the exchange forward, with each question building on the last.

Availability starts with Android 9 and above, in places where Gemini Live already runs. Google had previewed the capability on September 1 in its Android Drop, where it carried a warning that the tool can err and is not a medical device, mobility aid or substitute for safe-travel guidance.

Google said it developed the feature with the accessibility community. Partner Aira supplied tens of thousands of hours of visual interpretation data, and over 1,000 testers from Aira’s network helped stress-test and refine the model while specialists helped set guardrails.

Testing ran across India, Brazil, Singapore, Indonesia and Japan, aiming to make descriptions and reframing cues useful for everyday tasks.
