Scope of the Investigation

The widening probe into AI chip smuggling has direct implications for investors tracking Nvidia and Super Micro Computer, whose stock prices are shown below. Taiwan’s expanded investigation — now targeting nine individuals across 12 sites — signals escalating regulatory risk in the AI hardware supply chain, a sector that has drawn intense investor attention amid the global AI boom.

The alleged diversion of approximately 50 high-end AI servers to China through forged documents and rerouting via Japan underscores the premium that Chinese buyers place on restricted Nvidia chips, a dynamic that has created both opportunity and compliance exposure for companies like Super Micro. For shareholders, the investigation highlights the regulatory tightrope that AI hardware companies must navigate as U.S. export controls reshape the global semiconductor trade.

Legal Implications

Currently, exporting AI chips to China is not a criminal offense under Taiwanese law, forcing prosecutors to rely on other statutes to pursue charges. In response, lawmaker Chung Chia-pin plans to introduce an amendment to the Foreign Trade Act that would explicitly prohibit the export of semiconductor chips to mainland China. The targeted chips, manufactured by Nvidia, are critical for training and running advanced AI systems.

The raids covered 12 sites, including the homes of six suspects and offices of Super Micro Computer, Albatron Technology, and Chief Telecom.
