AI and the Future of Work
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos pushed back against fears that artificial intelligence will replace human workers, instead predicting the technology will create a labor shortage. Speaking at the VivaTech conference in Paris, Bezos dismissed concerns from tech and political figures who warn that AI threatens job prospects. He argued that AI will unlock new opportunities and increase demand for human labor, contradicting warnings from former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and labor unions about job displacement.
Bezos emphasized that people are limited not by a lack of ambition but by barriers that technology can help remove. He pointed to his new AI venture Prometheus, which focuses on accelerating physical manufacturing, a sector already becoming increasingly automated. The Trades Union Congress has cautioned that AI could repeat the disaster of deindustrialization, though it acknowledges the technology’s transformative potential if developed properly.
Space Ambitions and Robotics
Bezos also outlined his vision for space exploration, describing space as supply constrained rather than demand constrained. He stated that the Moon offers a natural starting point for humanity’s expansion beyond Earth due to its proximity and resources. “We’re going to the Moon to stay, not just to visit,” Bezos said, adding that technologies like electrolysis could enable lunar resources to refuel rockets. He also addressed a recent setback for Blue Origin, where an uncrewed New Glenn rocket exploded during a ground test, noting that critical infrastructure survived the incident and launches are expected to resume before year end.
At the expo, Unitree’s humanoid robot drew large crowds, teaming up with French neuro-AI company HABS to demonstrate brain controlled interaction. Visitors used a headband with an EEG to command the robot through cognitive signals rather than speech. The demo showcased a broader trend at VivaTech: AI moving beyond chatbots into the physical world, with humanoid robots being developed for healthcare, manufacturing, and hospitality.
