Agent browsers get a lightweight rival as Cloudflare ships Kitesurf

Cloudflare's agent-first browser runs on Workers and skips the human web stack.

Cloudflare has joined the rush to build a browser for machines instead of people. Kitesurf, announced August 7, is a cloud-hosted browser designed for AI agents, and it runs entirely on the company’s serverless Workers platform. The project went from idea to beta in about 12 weeks.

Traditional browsers optimize for human eyes: tabs, themes, extensions. Kitesurf skips all of that. The company says an agent browser must instead manage context windows, token costs, and scalability, while facing a different threat model where prompt injection attacks are a first-class concern.

Under the hood, Kitesurf combines a modular rendering engine from Blitz, Firefox’s Stylo CSS parser, and Boa JS, a Rust ECMAScript engine. Cloudflare says it already passes more than 215,000 web platform tests, with hundreds more added each week. The proof of concept started as a port of Obscura, an open source Rust headless engine, to Workers.

Developers can drive the browser programmatically today through Browser Run, Cloudflare’s service for controlling headless browser instances on its network. Kitesurf is free while in beta. The pitch to builders is efficiency: the company claims it consumes less CPU and memory than Chromium for common agentic tasks like screenshots and HTML extraction, which keeps costs down for agents that browse constantly.

Cloudflare is the latest infrastructure player betting that AI agents will need their own web tooling rather than borrowing the human web stack. The browser already renders pages like Wikipedia, Hacker News, and the TodoMVC benchmark, and the company is adding compliance with the web platform test suite every week.
