The End of a Monogamous Marriage

For years, the OpenAI Microsoft partnership was presented as a model of AI synergy: Microsoft got exclusive access to the world’s hottest models, and OpenAI got unlimited compute and a cushy $1 billion investment. But that fairy tale is over. Today, the two companies announced a renegotiated agreement that shatters the exclusivity clause, allowing OpenAI to offer its models on any cloud provider, including Amazon Bedrock. The deal was reportedly driven by a staggering $50 billion side deal between OpenAI and Amazon, which Microsoft threatened to sue over. The new terms limit Microsoft’s license to a non exclusive arrangement through 2032, and the infamous AGI clause that would have triggered an automatic dissolution of exclusivity is now moot.

The Cash Grab and the Cloud Wars

This is a transparent power play. OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser told staff that the old deal “limited our ability to meet enterprises where they are,” a diplomatic way of saying Microsoft’s walled garden cost them money. The amended agreement caps the revenue sharing payments Microsoft receives by 2030, and crucially, that payment is no longer tied to any nebulous “AGI” milestone. This effectively lets OpenAI double dip: it can keep Microsoft as a steady check writer while simultaneously selling access to rivals like AWS. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s gleeful social media post confirmed that OpenAI models will drop on Bedrock “in the coming weeks.” The message is clear: loyalty in AI means nothing compared to the next data center contract.
