India is the next market for ChatGPT advertising. OpenAI said Thursday it will begin showing ads on the assistant’s free and Go tiers there, its biggest pool of unpaid users.
The rollout opens with 50 brands and agency partners WPP and Omnicom. A self-serve ad manager follows next month, letting marketers run campaigns with a daily minimum budget of ₹725, roughly $7.60.
ChatGPT counts more than 100 million weekly active users in India, OpenAI said in February, most of them on free or low-cost plans. The company has courted the market with a sub-$5 Go tier, free-period promotions, and cricket sponsorships.
US users saw ads starting in February, and Europe followed this month after OpenAI changed its terms of service. The push precedes a possible IPO, with The Wall Street Journal reporting $6.7B in second-quarter revenue and The Information saying OpenAI targets 220 million paying subscribers by 2030.
