Replit is taking the meter off everyday AI work. A new Free Mode lets subscribers chat, ideate, and run routine tasks without consuming credits, powered under the hood by OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna, the company announced in an August update.
The change targets a familiar friction point in AI coding tools: juggling model choices, context windows, and usage counters. Replit’s argument is that intelligence has become abundant while access stayed complicated, and Free Mode removes the accounting from routine tasks while premium work still draws credits.
“Free Mode, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna, will allow everyone to create more for just the cost of their monthly subscription,” the company wrote in its launch post.
OpenAI promoted the partnership separately, noting that Replit users can turn ideas into working software without watching token costs. Luna is the smaller model in OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 family and already powers ChatGPT’s free tier.
The move lands as AI-assisted development platforms compete on pricing and accessibility, with credit-free tiers emerging as a differentiator for mainstream builders.
