The Test That Backfired
Anthropic briefly stirred up developer anger by testing the removal of Claude Code from its $20 per month Pro subscription tier. The company modified its public pricing page to show that Claude Code, a popular agentic coding tool, was only available on the $100 plus Max plan. New users signing up for the Pro tier during this small scale test were unable to access the tool, while existing subscribers saw no changes to their service. Social media erupted with confusion and frustration as screenshots of the altered pricing page spread.
Anthropic Explains the Compute Crunch
Amol Avasare, Anthropic’s head of growth, clarified on social media that this was a limited experiment affecting only about 2 percent of new prosumer signups. He explained that usage patterns have fundamentally shifted since the Max plan launched a year ago. Tools like Claude Code, Cowork, and long running asynchronous agents now dominate how subscribers engage with the service. Engagement per subscriber has increased significantly, and the existing plan structure was not designed to handle this level of demand. Avasare noted that previous adjustments like weekly caps and tighter limits during peak hours have not been enough to manage the compute constraints.
Understanding User Backlash
Many developers have built their daily workflows around Claude Code, making the potential removal a significant disruption. Critics pointed out that updating the public documentation to reflect a universal change while only testing on a small percentage of users was confusing and poorly communicated. Anthropic quickly reverted the pricing page to include Claude Code in the Pro plan. Avasare promised that any future changes affecting existing subscribers would come with ample advance notice and direct communication, rather than being discovered through social media posts. The incident highlights the ongoing tension between AI companies managing skyrocketing demand and users who depend on these tools for their productivity.
