Nvidia backstops face a credit test as neocloud shares slide

Three portfolio cloud providers are down at least 30 percent this month while insurance against their default gets dearer.

Two years of converting chip dominance into balance-sheet muscle put Nvidia on the hook for customer borrowings and leases. Credit desks, not stock pickers, are now the ones setting a price on that posture.

The July quarterly filing listed $36 billion of off-balance-sheet arrangements for neocloud clients. Separately it carries a guarantee of as much as $105 billion covering silicon, real estate and electricity at a planned 10-gigawatt OpenAI campus in Ohio. Nvidia also put its name on $20 billion of future leases that it means to hand off later. On the bulk of these commitments, money moves only when a counterparty fails.

CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN, three unprofitable firms the company has funded, have each shed at least 30% of market value during October. Insurance against a CoreWeave default now costs more than 11% via credit default swap spreads.

Elsewhere the picture is messier. Firmus, an Australian cloud provider, dropped its float without warning, while Nscale and SB Energy lodged US listing paperwork in September and have gone quiet.

David Trainer, who runs New Constructs, frames the downside bluntly: if compute demand undershoots the projections baked into these structures, trouble follows. Jensen Huang counters that appetite far outstrips supply and that the memory squeeze will persist.

What traders are trying to work out is whether Nvidia’s own cash pile absorbs a stall among tenants whose growth it bankrolled.
