OpenAI said Wednesday that ChatGPT’s phone app can now take spoken instructions for real work, not just questions. The change brings voice tooling already live on desktop to iOS and Android.
Plus and Pro subscribers get the most. Using the Work tab, they can dictate a document, draft an email, summarise Slack messages, build a site, assemble a presentation or open the cloud browser. Free and Go tiers reach plugins and connected apps instead.
Voice replies carry richer formatting now, and users can move between typing and talking mid-conversation. A thread started on a phone can be finished on a desktop.
The groundwork came in July, when GPT-Live arrived as a conversational model. Desktop users met it first, using it for task work and for builds in Codex. Phones had no equivalent until now.
Anthropic has taken a different route. It folded Cowork into its chat interface and made movement between laptop and handset less clunky. At OpenAI the two spaces stay apart, a division that reads as chosen rather than pending.
