Hyosung bets US data centers need its solid-state transformers

The Korean heavy-industry firm pairs its 22.9kV power converter with American production plants.

Electricity has become the hardest input in the AI buildout, and the companies that make grid gear are the new gatekeepers. Hyosung Heavy Industries is pushing deeper into that role, announcing on September 7 that solid-state transformer technology will anchor a bigger US drive backed by factories the Korean firm already runs there.

The centerpiece is a converter Hyosung first showed in 2022. It calls that 22.9kV device a world first in connecting directly to urban distribution networks, and it argues the power-semiconductor-based design gives it an edge in a field where precision voltage control meets old-fashioned grid insulation duties.

Demand signals are strong. AI campuses are pushing electricity consumption to levels that force utilities to replace aging infrastructure, and market research cited by the company sees solid-state transformer sales climbing more than 40 percent annually. The highest-voltage tier, the segment data centers need, is still young, with only a few players worldwide chasing commercial projects.

Hyosung’s US plants already build ultra-high-voltage transformers and circuit breakers, which means the new converter line can lean on a domestic manufacturing footprint as orders materialize. Transformer lead times have become a notorious chokepoint for hyperscaler construction, and suppliers with local capacity are courting the same queue of projects.

The bet is that next-generation conversion gear becomes standard equipment for the AI grid, not an experimental side market, and that the company’s early start pays off as utilities and campuses standardize on it.
