Doctors can now read Epic patient charts through ChatGPT Health, with OpenAI promising the assistant never writes anything back into the record. Epic’s systems hold data on more than 325 million patients.

The integration lets doctors and nurses surface appointment notes, lab results, medications, and specialist documentation without leaving a chart. OpenAI says access is read-only, and the model never writes anything back into the record. Some deployments will embed ChatGPT directly inside EHR workflows for pre-visit reviews and clinical timelines.

A new Healthcare Public Data plugin pulls from sources like ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed, helping staff check trial eligibility, medication identifiers, and coverage policy versions.

The rollout also widens what business customers can do. Organizations holding a Business Associate Agreement, the HIPAA data contract, gain ChatGPT Work, Codex, apps, and connectors in their workspaces.

The move builds on last month’s consumer rollout, when OpenAI said people ask 300 million health-related queries every week. The company surveyed 4,300 physicians across 27 use cases and reported 99.1% of responses were safe, while insisting the tool is not meant for diagnosis or treatment.

The timing is awkward. Legal pressure is building around the rollout: a Florida pastor filed suit days earlier claiming a ChatGPT answer nearly killed him, and a May lawsuit blamed the assistant for wrongful dosage advice.
