A €387.8M contract between EuroHPC and French vendor Bull will put a next-generation AI supercomputer in Finland. LUMI-AI is headed for CSC’s data center in Kajaani with deployment expected in the second half of 2027.
The machine’s computing muscle comes from AMD. Instinct MI430X accelerators drive the AI work, while 6th Gen EPYC processors bring 256 cores per chip to the node. EuroHPC expects ten times the AI capacity of today’s LUMI and nearly double its high-performance computing output, gains the project credits to GPU architectures far stronger on AI tasks.
The European Union’s Digital Europe Programme covers half the funding, with Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland sharing the rest. The liquid-cooled system uses Bull’s BullSequana XH3500, IBM storage, Nokia networking, and Bull’s BXI interconnect.
AMD positions the MI430X for scientific HPC and sovereign AI, blending FP64 precision for simulation with the throughput large model training demands.
