Anthropic confirms a Bay Area wet lab for model-run biology

The company says its models need real experiments, not only simulated ones, to matter in biology.

A wet lab in the Bay Area is now part of Anthropic’s research operation, the company has told TechCrunch.

Simulation is not the plan. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, who runs life sciences at the company, told Reuters that a real experiment remains biology’s decisive test, and that Anthropic is running them now. He described a standard biotech arrangement, with internal projects on one side and partner work on the other.

What the lab studies is narrower than the news may suggest. Anthropic describes the focus as fundamental biology. Drug discovery stays with partners, which keeps the company clear of the pharmaceutical customers it sells models to.

Two other September moves point the same direction. A new verification program opens the strongest models to vetted bio researchers, and a joint drug discovery agreement with Novo Nordisk was announced.

Ownership of a bench was already in motion. A stealth biotech called Coefficient Bio joined Anthropic through an April acquisition.

Most major diseases could be cured inside five to ten years, according to CEO Dario Amodei. Reaching that would take a model able to test its theories against physical matter, which is the argument for the lab.

Safety pressure forms the other context. Researcher Jacob Coxon resigned recently. His warning was blunt: the builders believe AI could kill everyone by 2030. Anthropic’s own alignment lead has put the odds above 10 percent.
