More than three million US military personnel now have an OpenAI chatbot approved for their unclassified work. The Department of War turned on ChatGPT Mil this week inside GenAI.mil, its enterprise AI platform for the armed forces.
The tool handles chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs across planning, policy, logistics, and administration. It carries accreditation for Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5 and runs in authorized government cloud infrastructure, where the department says data stays separate from OpenAI’s public systems and never feeds its commercial models.
The switch-on completes the adoption phase of a partnership signed in 2025. GenAI.mil passed one million unique users within its first two months, with every military service using it and 100 percent uptime, the department said.
Officials describe the addition as part of a broader push outlined in the department’s AI Acceleration Strategy and the White House’s AI Action Plan, and say pairing ChatGPT Mil with other frontier models gives the platform a multi-model setup that frees staff for higher-value work.
