The Claude model family now has a full 5-series roster. Anthropic shipped Opus 5 on July 24, filling the middle slot between the entry-level Haiku tier and the flagship Fable 5. Pricing starts at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, significantly below Fable 5’s rates.
The company emphasized that Opus 5 prioritizes verification over speed. During internal testing, the model independently assembled a computer vision system based on a deliberately vague prompt, working through the problem iteratively rather than guessing at the answer. Anthropic designed this behavior specifically for enterprise workflows where correctness matters more than response time.
Enterprise customers get a meaningful concession: Opus 5 is exempt from Anthropic’s 30-day data retention policy, unlike the larger Fable and Mythos models. That distinction removes a major barrier for regulated industries evaluating Anthropic’s technology stack.
A beta feature called Automatic Fallbacks catches requests that trigger safety classifiers and routes them to a smaller model instead of dropping them. Anthropic projects Opus 5’s safety guardrails will intervene 85% less often than Fable 5’s, keeping production pipelines running with fewer interruptions.
