Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made his first-ever post on X on July 24, sharing an open letter signed by 25 companies including Microsoft, Nvidia, and Palantir that urged Washington to preserve open-weight AI models as a foundation for American technology leadership. The letter warns policymakers not to repeat the near-miss of over-restricting open-source software in the 1980s.
The intervention comes as the White House weighs its response to Chinese AI advances, particularly after Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 open-weight model rivaled leading US systems. Huang, who built a $172 billion fortune on AI chips, argued that open-weight models are essential for the innovation ecosystem and that overly broad restrictions could cede ground to foreign competitors.
Tech industry leaders have been publicly debating open versus closed AI models for months. The letter aligns with a growing coalition that includes Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab, which debuted an open-weight model just days earlier, and contrasts with labs like OpenAI and Anthropic that have moved toward more restricted release strategies.
