Hugging Face teaches a chat model to read raw genetic code

Carbon-X adds DNA tokens to a 14B text model so researchers can paste a sequence and ask about it in English.

Hugging Face’s bio team has published Carbon-X, a 14B model that handles DNA and written language in the same conversation. Researchers can paste a raw sequence and ask what a variant does, which regions regulate a gene, or which organism a fragment came from.

The build starts from Qwen3-14B. The team extends the vocabulary with tokens for nucleotides, initializes those embeddings at random, then trains for about 10 billion tokens with the rest of the transformer frozen. Only the new DNA embeddings learn during that phase. The whole model is unfrozen afterward for mid-training on mixed sequence and text.

Releasing the weights under an Apache 2.0 license makes it the largest openly licensed model of its kind that answers in ordinary prose. Earlier DNA models were built for narrow classification tasks and returned scores rather than sentences.

The benchmarks cover variant pathogenicity, regulatory annotation, organism classification and sequence continuation. Hugging Face claims state-of-the-art results among open models and parity with frontier proprietary systems at a fraction of the serving cost.

The caveat is where the numbers come from. Those comparisons rest on the model card and five published benchmarks. No wet-lab validation has been done, so predictions about whether a variant causes disease remain computational claims.

That distinction matters for anyone tempted to use the outputs clinically. Benchmarks measure agreement with known labels, not biological truth, and the model has not been evaluated on prospective experiments.
