Bob McGrew’s Arda raises $230M to put agents on factory floors

The former OpenAI research chief's startup is valued at $1.5B for agent software that rebuilds assembly lines on demand.

Arda, the manufacturing software company founded by former OpenAI research chief Bob McGrew, has raised $230M at a $1.5B valuation. Investors in the round included Khosla Ventures, Accel and lead Altimeter Capital. Arda’s models have already gone into production with defense technology firm Anduril.

McGrew’s pitch for the product rests on a comparison programmers will get immediately. He calls it a user interface plus an agent built for manufacturing engineers, doing at the factory bench what coding assistants such as Cursor already do for people writing software.

The bottleneck is retooling

His framing rests on a specific cost. When a design changes, a human worker can be retrained in a day. Reconfiguring the automation to match the new design takes three to six months.

That gap is what makes defense and drone manufacturing expensive. Iteration speed is set by the machinery, not the design team, and every change resets the clock.

McGrew spent 2017 to 2024 at OpenAI working on reasoning, and he stayed through the November 2023 weekend when Sam Altman was fired and rehired. He left in the 2024 wave that also took Mira Murati and Ilya Sutskever.

His bet is that manufacturing is the next large domain where software has been slow to absorb machine learning. Factory automation remains largely deterministic and hand-tuned, and the retooling lag he describes is a direct consequence.

The Anduril deployment gives Arda a reference customer in the most demanding segment. Whether the approach generalises to high-volume civilian production is the question the round is paying to answer.
