Microsoft bundles chat, code and agents into one Copilot app

The redesigned Copilot splits into Home, Code and Autopilot tabs and moves the agentic parts to usage-based billing.

Microsoft is folding its AI chat, coding tools and autonomous agents into a single Copilot app, two months after chief executive Satya Nadella confirmed the overhaul was coming.

The redesign gives Copilot three tabs. Home merges Copilot Chat with the Cowork agent and becomes the default landing screen, with a Today dashboard surfacing emails, meeting requests and Teams threads. Code is the surprise addition, a sandboxed environment built on the same technology as GitHub Copilot that lets non-developers build trackers, dashboards and automations hosted inside their own tenant. Autopilot, previously known as Scout, is a persistent agent with its own identity, memory, computer and workspace, built on Microsoft IQ so it can follow how an organization actually works.

Governance is the pitch. Autopilot can be mentioned in Teams and Outlook like a colleague, with permissions, audit trails and controls attached. Fabric IQ and Work IQ supply enterprise context, a Copilot Managed Runtime runs AI-built applications, and a unified plugin registry connects capabilities. Fabric IQ is generally available in Chat and Cowork, and Work IQ enters public preview over the next month.

Billing changes too. Cowork, Code and Autopilot move to usage-based pricing, so long-running agent work and models such as Astra and Fable are charged by consumption. IT teams will need Microsoft’s new FinOps for AI tooling to keep agent spending under control.
