A $3B price tag now sits on Generalist, the robotics startup chasing a universal robot brain. Two people familiar with the matter say 8VC led a roughly $200M extension disclosed in a regulatory filing. The money layers on top of a $400M Series B led by Radical Ventures in June, which had valued the company at $2B, taking the round to $600M total.
The startup was founded in 2024 by Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, both ex-Google DeepMind researchers, and Andrew Barry, a former Boston Dynamics engineer. Its backers include 8VC, Radical Ventures, Nvidia, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, and Fei-Fei Li.
Video demos do the teaching for GEN-1.5, Generalist’s latest foundation model. Clips as short as 3 to 12 seconds give robots a new task, the company says. A handful of customers are already tailoring the model to specific use cases.
The round lands in a heated market for robot brains. Rival valuations are running hot. Physical Intelligence carries a reported $11B tag. SoftBank-backed Skild AI sits at $14B. Genesis AI fielded investor interest last month at $3B. Backers hope robotics is approaching a “ChatGPT moment,” while some VCs warn that robots cannot train on the internet’s data the way language models do, so a truly general robot model may stay out of reach for years.
