OpenAI has opened a new front in its policy work: AI Futures, the blog of a small Strategic Futures team asking how free society should be restructured to preserve individual rights and agency as transformative AI arrives.

The team frames its mandate around concentration of power, calling it the largest and most conceptually difficult risk in AI safety. Its first post argues that the modern state depends on mass cooperation – soldiers, police, taxpayers – and that autonomous systems and machine intelligence could one day let governments project force and raise revenue without that bargain. The blog opens with a James Madison quote on parchment barriers, signaling a long-form, essay-driven approach rather than a product announcement.

The launch is notable for what it is not: a safety benchmark, a model release, or a lobbying push. OpenAI has dabbled in policy essays before, but a dedicated team with its own publication suggests the company sees the political consequences of AI as a first-class problem.

Critics will note the timing is convenient for a lab under scrutiny in Washington and Brussels. Whether the essays translate into positions OpenAI actually takes – or lobbying it actually does – is the part worth watching.
