More than 5,000 applications competed for 278 project awards under the White House’s Genesis Mission, a $5 billion cross-agency push to apply artificial intelligence across scientific research, the Department of Energy announced July 22.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright unveiled the awards during a rollout that spanned 15 federal agencies. The selection includes 87 national lab projects, 168 university efforts, 19 corporate projects, and 4 nonprofit initiatives — together spanning 342 institutions.
The largest single award, a $60 million nuclear energy project led by Idaho National Lab and the University of Texas at Austin, aims to use AI to accelerate nuclear facility permitting and delivery. Other funded areas include critical mineral discovery, intelligent chip design, and commercial fusion energy research.
Arcee AI is building Genesis-Science-1, an American open-weight scientific AI model with a governed research harness that maintains reproducible records of scientific workflows. OSTP Director Michael Kratsios said the initiative represents a modern institutional mobilization modeled on past large-scale federal science efforts.
