OpenAI has officially entered the hardware market with a $230 light-up keyboard designed to pair with its AI coding assistant, Codex. The Codex Micro, co-designed with specialty keyboard maker Work Louder, is being advertised as a physical command center for managing fleets of AI coding agents.
The device comes equipped with light-up Agent Keys that show agent status, customizable Command Keys that act as shortcuts for frequent Codex actions, and a joystick for launching common workflows. A dial adjusts how much reasoning power an agent uses on a given task. OpenAI says the keyboard is controllable via the ChatGPT desktop app.
The timing is notable. Apple last week sued OpenAI, alleging the company’s senior leadership orchestrated a deliberate strategy to extract trade secrets for use in developing its own hardware device. Bloomberg also revealed Tuesday that OpenAI is developing a portable, screenless smart speaker with moving mechanical elements, designed by former Apple engineers. OpenAI has denied wrongdoing in the Apple case.
The Codex Micro is a limited-run collaboration, signaling it’s more of a novelty than a mass-market product. But it represents OpenAI’s first tangible hardware release as the company explores devices beyond software.
