Public Sentiment and Key Findings

A new Gallup poll conducted in March 2026 reveals that 71 percent of Americans oppose the construction of AI data centers in their neighborhoods, with 48 percent expressing strong opposition. This resistance is notably higher than opposition to nuclear power plants, which stands at 53 percent, a figure that has never exceeded 63 percent since tracking began in 2001.

Public Sentiment and Key FindingsImpact and Scope

The survey highlights significant demographic and regional divides. Democrats are far more likely to be strongly opposed (56 percent) compared to Republicans (39 percent), and women (55 percent) are more opposed than men (43 percent). Geographically, opposition is strongest in the Midwest (76 percent) and South (75 percent).

Impact and Scope

Opponents of AI data centers cite concerns over high water and energy consumption, pollution, and rising utility costs. Supporters point to potential benefits such as new jobs and increased tax revenue. The backlash is already influencing policy. In March 2026, Senator Bernie Sanders introduced the Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act, which would ban new AI data center construction until laws protecting workers, the environment, and consumers are established.

Gallup warns that this public sentiment could become a significant campaign issue and may substantially slow the massive nationwide buildout of AI infrastructure. The findings suggest a growing tension between the expansion of AI technologies and community concerns about their local impact.
