The Emperor’s New Consulting Firm

OpenAI just pulled a classic Silicon Valley pivot. The company that promised to democratize AGI is now selling bespoke enterprise deployments through a shiny new subsidiary: the OpenAI Deployment Company. With a $4 billion investment injection and a $10 billion pre-money valuation, this isn’t a side project. It’s a $14 billion bet that the real money isn’t in selling API tokens, but in holding corporate hands through the AI integration process. The move signals that pure model licensing isn’t enough anymore. OpenAI wants to be your IT department, your strategy consultant, and your deployment partner all at once. Conflict of interest? Please. They’ll sell you the model, then charge you to install it, tune it, and probably maintain it too.

Who’s Watching the Watchdogs?

Here’s the messy part. OpenAI is now both the model maker and the deployment consultant. If your business deploys a system that hallucinates a critical error or leaks sensitive data, who do you blame? The tool or the installer? OpenAI will pocket fees from both sides. And with no clear separation between the arms, this feels less like a service expansion and more like a lock in play. Regulators should be paying attention. Meanwhile, startups offering independent AI consulting just got a very well funded competitor that also owns the IP. Good luck competing with that. This isn’t innovation. It’s vertical integration with a friendly grin and a $14 billion price tag.
