As first reported by hket, Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) is undergoing a major digital transformation centered around artificial intelligence.

Chairman Thomas Hui To emphasized that AI is not just a tool for cost-saving but a game-changing force, calling it “revolutionary” for long-form video production. He noted that AI’s current use in dubbing and subtitle generation has already yielded a 50% increase in post-production efficiency, and that the company aims to expand this technology into short video production.

Hui To stressed that these technological gains enable TVB to reallocate resources into content quality, creating a self-sustaining loop of innovation and improvement. Last year alone, TVB’s efficiency-focused strategies saved HK$500 million in operating costs. To advance these efforts, TVB has signed MOUs with Tencent Music, Huawei Hong Kong, and iFLYTEK, while internally fostering a culture that embraces experimentation and risk-taking in AI development.

Parallel to its AI strategy, TVB is deepening its presence in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). According to General Manager Lo Sai-wah, advertising revenue has grown steadily through direct operations in Guangdong, with TVB’s channels performing strongly in both Hong Kong and mainland China. TVB is also integrating GBA elements into its programming and producing shows directly in the region from its new studios in Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

TVB’s international ambitions are also expanding. Pearl Channel will continue to produce English-language content aimed at global distribution. Unique cultural programs, such as the “Bun Scrambling Competition,” have already gained traction overseas, being picked up by nearly 200 broadcasters after translation.

TVB’s twin focus on artificial intelligence and regional integration reflects a forward-looking vision that aims to modernize operations while deepening market reach. By positioning AI innovation on par with its GBA strategy, the company is signaling a bold transformation in how traditional media adapts to the digital era.
