Claude cites a wire service after a quiet licensing turn

Adweek reports Anthropic paid the Associated Press for election data that surfaced in Claude, the lab's first deal with a news publisher.

Anthropic has reportedly signed its first content licensing agreement with a news publisher, and the partner is the Associated Press. Adweek’s Mark Stenberg reported on November 4 that the deal was struck just before the US midterms, citing two people familiar.

Neither company has confirmed it. Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment, the AP would not speak on the record, and the price and term are not public.

What users would have seen

Anyone who asked Claude for the latest polling on election night would have received up-to-the-minute figures attributed to the AP, according to Adweek. That attribution does not appear in Anthropic’s own midterms plan, published October 14, which promises live results and credits Democracy Works for voting information.

That gap is the open question. The official record shows a promise of current results without naming a source. The AP connection rests on Adweek’s anonymous sources alone.

Why a fair-use argument still ends in a check

Anthropic has argued that training on publisher content is lawful, and in that view no license is needed. Adweek’s earlier reporting quoted digital media executives making exactly that case.

The new piece offers a practical explanation instead. Premium news sites increasingly block AI crawlers outright, leaving an answer engine with the unlocked web, which is thin material for naming a Senate winner ten minutes after the call.

The AP is an unusual first partner. It earns most of its revenue from licensing, it was first to sign with both Google and OpenAI, and it markets itself as a service rather than an editorial brand.

OpenAI, for comparison, has struck more than a dozen such deals. Anthropic had signed none before this one.
