A subreddit bans AI projects and touches off a revolt

Moderators of r/opensource say generated code is incongruent with the community and want non-English speakers out too.

The moderators of r/opensource posted a new rule set on Saturday evening that bars projects built with AI, made by AI, or intended for AI. The thread did not go quietly.

Their justification is a single line: the technology as it exists today is incongruent with an open-source community. Commenters pointed out that the Linux kernel now contains some AI-generated code, which under a literal reading would put kernel work outside the subreddit.

Other restrictions arrived in the same post. Submissions must be at least a year old, actively maintained and have several contributors, which shuts out solo developers looking for early help or collaborators. The mods also said they will no longer field requests for maintainers.

The sharpest rule targets language. Anyone who does not speak English is directed elsewhere, on the reasoning that moderators cannot distinguish AI-written text from AI-translated text, so a non-fluent poster cannot verify their own translation.

Moderator Wolvereness said in comments that enforcement would have nuance and cited accessibility features such as automatic captioning as a case where AI would be tolerated. That assurance has not calmed the thread.

A rival community, r/trueopensource, appeared within hours. The episode captures a broader tension, as maintainers weigh the flood of generated contributions against a norm of open participation.
