Credit markets put the AI buildout on notice

CoreWeave protection costs passed 11 percent, three neoclouds shed more than 30 percent this month, and SK Hynix walked away from its Solidigm listing.

The strain running through AI infrastructure moved from analyst notes into bond markets this week. Neocloud shares fell hard, default insurance got expensive, and a chipmaker shelved a listing.

CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN each lost well over 30% in October. Spreads on CoreWeave credit default swaps widened past 11%, a level traders treat as distress, while yields on its 2031 and 2032 unsecured notes climbed above 15%.

The trouble crossed borders. South Korea’s Elice Group dropped 30% on debut, and Australia’s NextDC plunged 39.5% after cutting its earnings forecast.

Balance sheets elsewhere are feeling it too. SK Hynix abandoned plans to take its Solidigm unit public, and Nvidia, Meta and Oracle are carrying the widest spreads ever recorded on swaps tied to their corporate bonds.

Gartner analysts expect 80% of neocloud companies to fold or be absorbed. The core question is whether rental revenue from AI workloads can service debt taken on against future demand.

Nvidia’s exposure is the piece investors keep circling. By its July filing the company carried $36B in off-balance-sheet cloud backstops for neoclouds, plus a guarantee of up to $105B for chips, land and power at a proposed 10-gigawatt OpenAI campus in Ohio.

Those obligations cost nothing unless a partner defaults. Shares across the group have now put that assumption to a test.
