Otter takes $320M without giving up a slice of itself

General Catalyst's customer value fund is financing the meeting-notetaker's enterprise push on marketing results rather than equity.

Otter.ai has secured $320M from General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund, a vehicle that supplies capital without taking equity and earns its return on the results of marketing spend instead.

The structure is unusual at this size. Otter’s total raised before now sat near $50M, with the last round in 2021, so the new money dwarfs everything that came before it without diluting existing holders.

Spending plans cover enterprise growth, go-to-market, international expansion and product work.

Ten years in a crowded room

The company crossed $100M in annual recurring revenue last year. It says 40M users have tried the product, up from 25M a year earlier, and declines to give a current revenue figure.

Retention is the open question. Meeting transcription has become a default feature rather than a product. Microsoft, Google and Zoom all ship summarisation inside tools people already pay for, and a wave of agent startups now sit in the same call taking notes.

Otter’s answer has been to move upmarket, where compliance, admin controls and integration depth count for more than a free tier. That path costs money to walk, which is what the financing buys.

The CVF arrangement also shifts risk. If the marketing does not convert, the fund’s return shrinks with it, and Otter keeps its cap table intact either way.
