Google Play opens a private lane for personal AI-built Android apps

Users can now run apps they built themselves on Android without publishing them to a storefront seen by billions.

Google Play will let people run apps they built with AI on their own Android devices without going through a public listing, the company announced Tuesday.

The apps stay private. They do not appear in Play search, do not surface on listing pages, and are visible only to the account that created them.

The gap this closes is practical rather than technical. Building a small personal app with a model has been easy for a while, but running it natively on a phone meant publishing it to the store, which exposed it to roughly three billion users.

That friction pushed many people to build web apps instead, since a browser runs anywhere. Native Android builds were reserved for projects someone actually wanted to distribute.

Under the new arrangement a user can create an app from prompts and launch it from Play while keeping it entirely private.

For Google the move keeps users inside its tooling rather than sending them to third-party build services. For developers it blurs a line the store has held for years, between a personal utility and published software.

Security teams are watching, since privately built apps can hold the same device permissions as published ones.
