Pluto Security raises $42M to chase risks from employee-built apps

The startup says most of the risk it finds inside customers comes from small tools non-developers built with AI.

Pluto Security emerged from stealth with $42M to protect companies from a problem of their own making: employees building software with AI faster than anyone can review it.

Chief executive Shahar Bahat said a newly released AI tool can appear inside a corporate environment within about two hours, well before any approval process catches up.

The data behind the pitch is the interesting part. Roughly 60 percent of the risks the company detects across its customer base sit in tools built by people who are not developers.

Finance departments generate the most of these, followed by marketing and legal teams. Engineers rank fourth, behind the groups that adopted AI builders fastest precisely because they are not trained to see the exposure.

One example cited involved a finance employee at a large company who built an app to manage customer information and churn, then left it reachable from the open internet.

The pattern is a familiar one in security: adoption outruns control, and the controls were designed for software that arrived through a procurement process.

Pluto’s bet is that discovery and continuous assessment beat policy alone, since the apps are often created and abandoned faster than a review cycle runs.
