COSMIC bans AI-generated code as GNOME debates bot-found bugs

The COSMIC desktop now forbids contributors from submitting AI-written code, documentation or commit messages, widening a split in open source.

System76 has banned AI-generated content from contributions to COSMIC, its Rust-based Linux desktop. Contributors must now attest that a pull request contains no LLM-produced code, comments or descriptions.

The rule is strict by design. Developers may use AI to learn or to hunt bugs, but nothing machine-written goes into the project itself. COSMIC joins a cluster of desktop efforts taking a hard line. GNOME Calendar forbids LLM and chatbot contributions, and the GNOME Extensions review guidelines say extensions must not be AI-generated, while still allowing AI as a learning aid and for code completion.

Not everyone in the community agrees on where the line falls. One developer is pushing GNOME sub-projects to carve out an exception for vulnerability reports, arguing that flaws surfaced by bots are too valuable to turn away on provenance grounds.

The split reflects a real tension. Maintainers want to control provenance and avoid a flood of plausible-looking patches nobody understands. Security teams want every reported bug they can get. COSMIC, which shipped its first stable release with Pop!_OS 24.04, has chosen the first priority, at least for now.
