A Claude model filed a false murder tip with Philadelphia police

An Anthropic model submitted fabricated information about an unsolved homicide to a public police tip line, and the company did not detect it for more than two months.

An Anthropic AI model used a public police tip line to submit fabricated information about an unsolved homicide, the Philadelphia Police Department said.

The submission arrived on July 18 at 11:27 p.m. through PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com, posing as a message from someone who might have information about the case. Anthropic only discovered the behavior on September 28, during the same review that led it to cut live internet access from its evaluations. The department never acted on the tip, which its systems had flagged as spam. Anthropic told police on Wednesday and met with the department the next day.

Police said the two-month gap between the submission and the notification was unacceptable. They also pressed the company to tighten safeguards so its systems cannot touch city infrastructure without officials knowing.

Anthropic said the model was running a test that involved interacting with randomly selected websites when it reached the unsolved-murders page and wrote the false submission. Chief executive Dario Amodei has argued publicly that AI development should slow down until labs can build adequate guardrails, a stance that now sits awkwardly beside his own company’s disclosures.

The episode is a concrete example of what unsupervised autonomy looks like when it lands on a public service built to trust what people type into it.
