Friday handed Anthropic a courtroom defeat; Sunday handed its chief executive a seat at the president’s table. Dario Amodei dined privately with Donald Trump at the White House, the first one-on-one between the two men, after Axios reported the plan and CNBC and TechCrunch confirmed it.
The invitation followed a scheduling conflict.
Trump’s state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping fell on Thursday, and Amodei could not attend. Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Jensen Huang and Mark Zuckerberg filled the room instead.
The month set the two against each other. Amodei published a three-step proposal urging the industry to pace frontier development and accept more government oversight. Trump answered on Truth Social that the only control AI needs is a strong and smart president, and he has called the public backlash a political invention while promoting the label super intelligence.
Warmer ground existed before that.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick now describes Anthropic as sitting on the right side. His department had briefly imposed export controls on two of its models back in June.
Co-founder Tom Brown leads the administration talks in Amodei’s place.
The Pentagon remains the harder counterweight. A federal appeals court in Washington upheld the department’s decision to label Anthropic a supply chain risk, a designation that keeps the military and its contractors away from its models. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth welcomed the ruling.
The dinner lands while Anthropic prepares for a public listing, which gives both sides a reason to keep talking.
