Google’s Chrome halves release cycles in the AI security era

Chrome 153 starts a two-week cadence meant to shrink the AI-era patch gap.

Chrome 153, released on September 8, is the first build on a two-week release cycle, halving the four-week rhythm Chrome has kept since 2021.

Google says AI reshaped the calculus. Automated tools and community reports feed a steady stream of patches, while AI-generated attacks leave teams less time to respond once a flaw goes public.

A faster cadence compresses the N-day window between a disclosed vulnerability and a shipped fix, keeping Chrome users protected days sooner than the old schedule allowed.

Speed also serves the feature race. AI-assisted development has produced a wave of challenger browsers, from Perplexity’s Comet to Opera Neon, Brave, Dia and DuckDuckGo’s entry, and Google wants room to iterate quickly on its own AI additions now that OpenAI’s Atlas browser has shut down.

Rivals appear to agree with the direction. Mozilla, Microsoft and Brave have moved to two-week schedules of their own, and the shorter drumbeat now sets the pace for the web platform as a whole.
