Lambda, the GPU rental specialist, borrowed $1B in private debt to expand its Nvidia fleet, with Microsoft lined up to lease the capacity. TechCrunch reported the financing on August 28, describing it as the latest in a string of loans for the company and fresh evidence of how expensive the AI buildout has become.

The neocloud is one of the most popular places for startups and enterprises to rent Nvidia accelerators by the hour. The new money locks in more hardware at a moment when leading chips remain scarce and reservation queues run long.

Microsoft as anchor tenant extends a pattern in which big cloud players lease third-party GPU fleets rather than raise the capital for every data center themselves. Lambda carries the hardware risk, but its demand side is largely pre-sold.

Debt has become the fuel of the neocloud sector, with young companies borrowing against future compute revenue. Rising memory prices and power costs keep pushing equipment prices higher, and lenders have warmed to chips as an asset class worth financing at scale.
