Both of the AI assistant giants now claim a billion monthly users, with Google announcing on August 11 that Gemini’s app crossed the mark weeks after OpenAI said the same about ChatGPT.
In a post on X, Pichai wrote that Gemini had become Google’s fastest-growing product. The app is also the 14th Google product to cross the billion-user line. Google’s numbers show the pace: 750 million monthly users in February, 950 million in late July, and more than a billion last week. A big share of the usage is spoken rather than typed, with 63 percent of users talking to the assistant, and the app now turns out more than 150 million images a day.
OpenAI had buried its own milestone in an August 6 blog post, noting that more than one billion people use ChatGPT, and a spokesperson later confirmed the app passed one billion monthly users in July. ChatGPT’s path has slowed from its early hype, going from 900 million weekly users in February to a billion roughly five months later.
Anthropic’s Claude keeps expanding too, though it does not publish user counts and independent estimates put it in the tens of millions.
