OpenAI’s first hardware device is reportedly a screenless smart speaker with mechanical elements that can move on its own, designed as a physical AI companion for the home.

Bloomberg reported that the device, still under development, is pitched internally as a humanlike AI companion that syncs with ChatGPT and proactively learns about its owner over time by accessing emails and other digital data.

The design incorporates moving parts that make the device feel alive, Bloomberg sources said, describing it as the physical manifestation of ChatGPT. The speaker was developed with help from former Apple engineers who worked on the iPhone and Mac.

The push into hardware comes as OpenAI faces a lawsuit from Apple, filed last week, accusing the company of stealing trade secrets related to hardware development. OpenAI has denied wrongdoing and told Bloomberg the new product differs significantly from anything Apple sells, making it unlikely to violate the claims.

The device category is seeing intense interest. Hark, an AI lab founded by Brett Adcock, raised a $700M Series A in May at a $6B valuation to build what it calls personal intelligence hardware.

OpenAI has not confirmed the device’s release timeline or pricing. The company’s hardware ambitions follow its pivot last week into a work agent platform with the launch of GPT-5.6.
