The Ever Expanding Checkbook

Google has pledged up to $40 billion to Anthropic, with an initial $10 billion floor that could balloon if the Claude developer hits performance targets. This comes hot on the heels of Amazon’s $5 billion injection just days ago, both deals valuing Anthropic at a staggering $350 billion. The catch? That money isn’t really cash. It’s mostly compute credits for Google’s TPU chips and cloud capacity. So Google pays Anthropic, and Anthropic immediately pays Google back for infrastructure. It’s a circular flow that inflates both companies’ AI ambitions without requiring either to actually risk much real money.

The Conflict That Isn’t a Conflict

Google is simultaneously a competitor in the AI model space with Gemini and a primary investor in Anthropic. That’s not synergy, that’s a structural conflict of interest dressed up as partnership. Anthropic’s recent growth spurt, driven by Claude Code and Claude Cowork products that ate OpenAI’s lunch during that company’s self inflicted crises, has created a demand supply gap that causes frequent outages. The solution isn’t better models or more efficient coding, it’s simply more compute. And who better to provide that compute than the company that also competes against you? This arrangement means Anthropic’s success directly feeds Google’s cloud business, tying the two companies together in a way that makes genuine competition impossible.

What This Means for Everyone Else

The real losers here are startups without a $40 billion sugar daddy. This isn’t an investment in AI progress, it’s an investment in vendor lock in. Anthropic scales, Google sells TPUs, and the rest of the ecosystem gets squeezed. Expect more outages as Anthropic struggles to operationalize this capital flood, and expect the “performance targets” to be carefully calibrated so Claude’s growth never threatens Google’s own model supremacy. The AI industry isn’t becoming a monopoly, it’s becoming a duopoly where your cloud provider is also your biggest rival.
