Capcom plans to fold AI into its engine, not its art

The Resident Evil studio says AI will speed up development workflows while stopping short of AI-made game assets.

Capcom is sketching a future where AI helps build its games, though the studio insists the art itself stays human. The outline came at a developer event this week.

A talk on the next generation of the RE Engine, the engine behind Resident Evil, framed the problem. Producing games at that scale makes even routine work expensive, said programmer Satoshi Ishida, and the answer he offered is folding AI into development workflows.

Capcom has said before that it will not put AI-made assets in its games, and Ishida’s presentation stayed inside that boundary. The roadmap he sketched pushes further anyway, describing a step-by-step shift toward an engine that generates content, aimed at a time when, in his words, games are created together with AI.

There is an ironic edge. Capcom’s own upcoming title Pragmata is built around the horrors of AI, and the contrast between that theme and the production plan drew comment.

The near-term goal is speed, not replacing the people who make the games.
